Old Dominion Electric Cooperative (ODEC) is a not-for-profit, member-owned electric cooperative that provides electricity to 11 member distribution cooperatives, which in turn serve more than 1.2 million customers in Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware. Founded in 1948, ODEC has a long history of providing reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity to its members. In recent years, ODEC has been actively developing renewable energy projects in the wind, solar, hydroelectric, and geothermal sectors.

Wind Energy

ODEC has been actively developing wind energy projects since 2008. The cooperative currently owns and operates two wind farms: the 30 MW Chestnut Flats Wind Farm in Pennsylvania and the 20 MW Wildcat Wind Farm in Indiana. Both wind farms were developed in partnership with other utilities and are located in areas with strong wind resources. ODEC is also a member of the Mid-Atlantic Renewable Energy Coalition, which is working to promote the development of offshore wind energy in the mid-Atlantic region.

Solar Energy

ODEC has been actively developing solar energy projects since 2013. The cooperative currently owns and operates two solar projects: the 2 MW Cherrydale Solar Project in Virginia and the 17 MW Greenwood Solar Project in Delaware. Both projects were developed in partnership with other utilities and are located in areas with strong solar resources. ODEC is also a member of the Solar Energy Industries Association, which is working to promote the development of solar energy in the United States.

Hydroelectric Energy

ODEC has been actively developing hydroelectric energy projects since 2015. The cooperative currently owns and operates two hydroelectric projects: the 3.3 MW Point of Rocks Hydroelectric Project in Maryland and the 1.5 MW Smith Mountain Hydroelectric Project in Virginia. Both projects were developed in partnership with other utilities and are located on existing dams. ODEC is also a member of the National Hydropower Association, which is working to promote the development of hydropower in the United States.

Geothermal Energy

ODEC has been actively exploring the potential for geothermal energy since 2017. The cooperative has conducted a feasibility study to assess the potential for geothermal energy in Virginia and is currently exploring potential partnerships with other utilities and developers. Geothermal energy has the potential to provide baseload power and could be a valuable addition to ODEC's renewable energy portfolio.

Overall, ODEC's renewable energy portfolio is a key part of the cooperative's commitment to providing reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity to its members. By developing wind, solar, hydroelectric, and geothermal projects, ODEC is helping to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and promote the transition to a cleaner energy future. ODEC's renewable energy projects also provide economic benefits to the communities where they are located, including job creation and increased tax revenue. As ODEC continues to develop its renewable energy portfolio, the cooperative is well-positioned to meet the evolving energy needs of its members while also contributing to a more sustainable future.
